Excursions

StadtWildTiere (German for urban wildlife) is a wildlife observation platform focused on the urban and suburban space. It has been running in Zurich for 10 years. Besides the platform each year special citizen science projects are carried out focusing on a target species group. On our excursion, we highlight various projects of StadtWildTiere that have been carried out over the past years and shed light on the opportunities and difficulties of citizen science projects.

A tour through the former Chratz Quarter

What does the everyday life of women have to do with urban development and what can the built city tell us about the life and work of women? These are the questions we will explore on our tour of the former Chratz quarter on the left bank of the Limmat. We show how public washing places had to make way for traffic at the end of the 19th century and how women came to the Frauenbadi and the first public women's toilet at Bürkliplatz. We stop at a former brothel as well as at a court that sentenced unwed mothers to prison. Finally, at the Hotel Baur au Lac, we tell the story of a woman who wanted to share in the city's big bucks and, in return, fooled Zurich society.
