Participant Requirements, Costs, and Accommodation
We welcome researchers from all research institutions and disciplines to apply for this in-person Winter School. The program is primarily designed for doctoral candidates, postdocs, and Citizen Science practitioners who aim to develop a project or idea, as well as those who are further along in the planning and implementation phase.
We strive for a diverse group of participants with different disciplinary backgrounds, a keen interest in research with societal relevance and new ways to interact with (non-academic) citizens. Sessions will be conducted in English, therefore fluency in both spoken and written English is essential.
Participation costs: The fee of 290 CHF (including tax) covers access to 5 days of lectures and practical coursework, accommodation*, and catering (lunch, coffee breaks, and dinner). In cases of special financial burden (e.g., for single parents), we offer a participation fee reduction of 100 CHF for a limited number of applicants. The participation fee must be paid by December 2, 2024. Participants will be responsible for managing any reimbursement from their institution, if applicable.
*Only for participants living abroad our outside the Canton of Zurich. We ask participants living in the Canton of Zurich who do require extra accommodation to indicate this in their application.
Selection criteria: First and foremost, applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in the topic of participatory research. Ideally, they are still in the early stages of their Citizen Science journey. We highly value active course participation and motivation to engage with other participants and share experiences. Therefore, applicants should have a strong command of the English language. Preliminary knowledge of participatory methods, principles, challenges, or settings is an asset. This knowledge could be acquired through recent research, NGO work, or volunteering. We also appreciate applicants who show social commitment through private, professional, or academic activities. Well-structured and complete applications are always a big plus.
High diversity of perspectives is essential for this school and Citizen Science in general. To ensure this, the organising team reserves the right to give preference to people based on their background. For example, in terms of discipline, the field of work, country of origin or gender.
